Aliens: The Original Comic Series II

Volume Two of the Aliens: The Original Comic Series, subtitled Nightmare Asylum and Earth War collects the rest of the popularly called original comic book trilogy, written by Mark Verheiden. While the story of Book II, as Nightmare Asylum was originally called, is a good and interesting story, the artist Den Beauvais makes this the definitive Aliens themed comic book. His illustrations perfectly represent the look of the movie, its cinematography (his cover for Aliens Book Two #2, which is also the cover of this hardcover book, is probably my favorite alien image and is a perfect representation of Aliens visual style, with the blue tone, and backlight illuminating a silhouette) and also its world. The look of ground machines, ships, cargo bays lit with side lights, octagonal corridor openings and much more make this comic book a return of the visual style of the film, like no one has captured before or after.

The second story of the book, which makes the last story of the trilogy, Earth War, has always been disappointing to me. Not fitting tonally with the films, or even the previous two series', and mostly weird action rather than story or character building. It's hard to believe it's the same writer. Not a fan of the artwork after the excellent first two, but I gotta give them credit for all looking completely different visually

The book looks absolutely gorgeous. Blue themed, with that backlit, stunning image of an alien warrior, hardcover with blue plated pages, its the most beautifully packaged alien related book so far.
